University Honors Scholarship Guidelines (2007-08)

The University Honors Scholarship is awarded through the ASU Financial Aid & Scholarships Office. Any questions concerning the scholarship should be directed to the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office at (870) 972-2310.

What the Scholarship Covers:

The University Honors Scholarship provides for 15 credit hours of tuition, fees, a double occupancy room in an ASU residence hall or the equivalent amount if residing in Collegiate Park or The Village , meals provided within the ASU cafeteria plan and a $1200 per year stipend ($600 per semester). Awards are contingent upon the availability of funds.
The tuition portion of the scholarship covers 15 credit hours (excluding correspondence work) for courses on the ASU-Jonesboro campus.
This scholarship is awarded for the duration of eight consecutive semesters or through completion of the undergraduate degree, whichever comes first, provided the student maintains all scholarship requirements.
The $600 per semester stipend includes any privately funded scholarships awarded through the university. Students who accept the University Honors Scholarship will not be eligible for additional scholarship funds from Arkansas State University that exceed this $600 per semester cap.
Students who decline to live in an ASU residence hall or purchase a meal plan will not receive the financial equivalent for off campus living.

How to Qualify:

The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis during the senior year to U.S. citizens who are Arkansas residents graduating from Arkansas high schools.
To be selected to compete for the scholarship, students must meet one of the following criteria:
1. Have an ACT composite score of 30 or above or 1340 or above on the SAT and a minimum of a 3.500 high school GPA on at least a six semester transcript.
2. Have an ACT composite score of 28 to 29 or 1260 to 1339 on the SAT and a minimum of a 3.750 high school GPA on at least a six semester transcript.
3. Be a National Merit semi-finalist or finalist.
To be considered, students must submit an admissions application with fee, official ACT or SAT scores, letter of interest, student resume, and an official six or seven-semester transcript. Only students who submit all materials by February 15th will be considered.
A limited number of awards are available.
The deadline for all scholarship application materials is February 15th of the high school senior year.

Student Responsibilities for Accepting and Maintaining the University Honors Scholarship Award:

Once students have begun their studies at Arkansas State University, the scholarship will be administered through the Honors Program. Any questions concerning maintenance of the scholarship should be directed to the Honors Program Director, at (870) 972-2308.

Students who are selected to receive the University Honors Scholarship will have until May 1st to accept the scholarship offer. After that time, the scholarship offer will no longer be valid. Should you accept the scholarship and later decide to attend another university, please notify the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office in writing or by email.
NOTE: Students receiving a room as part of their scholarship package must apply separately for housing through the Office of Residence Life and pay the applicable housing deposit.
Full-time enrollment of 15 college-level credit hours on the ASU-Jonesboro campus is required during each fall and spring semester. Concurrent enrollment on another campus cannot be used to meet full-time enrollment status nor be paid for by the scholarship.
Matriculation to ASU must occur in the fall or spring semester immediately following high school graduation.
Students must be enrolled in and successfully complete one honors course per fall and spring semesters. Students must fulfill the requirements of the University Honors Program or the scholarship will be revoked.
Any student who is enrolled full-time at another college, university, technical college, or branch of ASU during a regular semester (fall or spring) following high school graduation automatically forfeits the scholarship.
All college course work is calculated into the cumulative GPA for scholarship renewal.
Students who have grade changes are responsible for contacting the Director of the Honors Program so that their scholarship status may be reevaluated.

If a scholarship student needs to withdraw from a semester, he/she should notify the Director of the Honors Program as soon as possible and provide documentation of why withdrawal is necessary.
Award holders who are dependents of ASU faculty and staff will be paid the tuition and fees portion of the scholarship equal to their discounted tuition and fees and then also the remainder of the scholarship benefits for room, board and the stipend.

First Year Students

Students who fail to obtain a cumulative 3.500 GPA at the end of the first semester of enrollment, but have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.000 will be granted a probation period during the second semester only. During the probation period, the student will be placed on the Chancellor's Scholarship. At the end of the second semester, the cumulative grades will be reviewed for possible reinstatement at the appropriate level for the third semester. If the cumulative GPA is a 3.500 or above, the student will be reinstated on the University Honors Scholarship. If the GPA is a 3.250 - 3.499, the student will remain on the Chancellor's Scholarship. Probation is not available for any subsequent semesters.
Students must successfully complete a minimum of 30 credit hours by the end of the summer I term following their freshman year with a cumulative 3.500 GPA for the University Honors Scholarship or a minimum of 30 credit hours and a cumulative 3.250 to 3.499 GPA for the Chancellor's Scholarship to continue on either scholarship.

Second Year and Subsequent Years

Eligibility to continue on scholarship is checked at the end of the fall (December) and spring (May) semesters. Students with summer school work should remember that those grades may affect their scholarship status when cumulative GPA is reviewed.
University Honors scholars must be enrolled in and successfully complete one honors course per spring and fall semester.
Students must successfully complete a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester following their freshman year with a 3.500 cumulative GPA or the University Honors Scholarship is forfeited.
Students who successfully complete a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester following their freshman year with a 3.250 to 3.499 cumulative GPA will continue on Chancellor's Scholarship.
